DIY musical instruments for kids: drum and maracas

You can make music with things almost everyone has at home. With these instructions you can build two simple instruments from Cleto's world: a drum and maracas. The instructions are also available as a PDF to print.

Make a drum

You need: a metal or plastic can, a balloon, adhesive tape, scissors, paper and colored markers.

1. Cut the balloon at the thinner end.
2. Stretch the wider part of the balloon over the top of the can and seal it with tape.
3. Cover the can with paper and decorate it as you like.

Make maracas

You need: a plastic bottle, a cardboard tube (like a toilet paper roll), rice, adhesive tape, scissors, paper and colored markers.

1. Fill the bottle with a little rice, put on the cap and seal it with tape.
2. Attach the cardboard tube to the neck of the bottle and secure it with tape – and that's it!
3. Decorate your maraca as you like and use it to play along with your favorite songs.

For parents

An adult should help with the cutting. Keep balloon pieces and rice away from children under three.
